We've been living in a 360sqft apt with our 16mo old and we're making it work. She was born really tiny and was always a horrible sleeper. We had no idea how we were going to get her to sleep through the night with her in our bedroom. We originally had her in a mini pack and play, which was great until she outgrew it (when I saw outgrew, I mean curled up since there wasn't enough room to sleep lengthwise). At about 12 months, she was still waking up 1-3x a night and we were totally losing it. At this point she was big enough to stand up in the pack and play and see us next to her. It was time.
While she was still in the mini pack and play, we had the brilliant idea of moving the pack and play to the living room while doing a "dream feed" and then putting her down there. She started sleeping through the night (there were a couple days of 3AM wakeups and some tears, but it was actually pretty minimal).
That worked until I stopped breastfeeding. We then thought, she's not waking up when we lifted her, we may be able to carry the whole thing. So we started by putting her to bed in our room and carrying her (while sleeping) to the living room when we wanted to go to bed. This was working great. She continued to sleep through the night, we didn't have to tip toe around and try not to turn over and make noise.
Then she outgrew the mini pack and play, we upgraded to a regular pack and play which didn't really fit through the bedroom door. I looked at all of the dimensions of travel cribs hoping to find one that was just an inch narrower, which I found in the evenflo portable crib, EXCEPT it turns out the wheels are not narrower nor included in the dimensions. So, we stuck with regular sized pack and play. This can make it through the door sort of it. We need two people and it needs to come at a particular angle (and still scrapes the door frame). Miraculously, she does not wake up. At all. Maybe it's just the part of the sleep cycle she is in, but we are counting our lucky stars that it's working (for now!).
Why not just sleep in the living room you ask? We have a fold out futon, I just cannot imagine sleeping on it for more than a couple nights at a time. I also hate the ritual of having to go under the futon, grab the sheets and make the bed every night. It's terrible. I also like having a room that I feel like it our own. This does mean we have to tiptoe and hope she doesn't wake up if we ever need to go to the bathroom!
